What is KidZone?

KidZone is what we call the children's ministry of the Heartland Vineyard Church. It includes all ministries serving children newborn through 5th grade. The KidZone is a practical demonstration of the Vineyard value for children. We believe that children are gifts from God. As such, they deserve the same quality of ministry we offer to adults. KidZone is a place where children will experience Jesus—His word and works—and learn how to express His love in their daily lives. We focus on teaching children the Bible while also coaching them to express God's love through hands-on prayer, worship, and sharing their faith.

What is the time commitment for serving in KidZone?

We ask that our volunteers serve at one service every four weeks. You will be assigned a color (orange, green, blue, or purple) which will be your team color. You will serve on the weekend that corresponds to your color. In theory, you will serve with the same core group of people every time you volunteer in KidZone. That means you will serve 13 times throughout the year. Each time you serve we ask that you arrive a half hour early and stay in your room until all of the children are picked up by their guardian. This is usually about a 2-hour commitment on Sunday. The other time we ask of you is in reading the prepared curriculum, praying, and preparing to share the love of Jesus.

Does it take a lot of time to prepare before I serve?

We ask that all volunteers prepare by looking through the curriculum they will be teaching that week. Our curriculum is First Look by ReThink Group for the younger children and 252 Basics by ReThink Group for the older kids. The curriculum is posted on the Heartland Vineyard website. We ask that you read through the lesson and activities in order to know what you will be teaching the kids during your service. All of the activities you will be using on Sunday are prepared for you and waiting in your classroom. We encourage you to spend time reading through the Bible verses or stories that you will be teaching and spending time in prayer to prepare for Sunday morning.

What if I am not available to serve on a regular basis but would still like to help?

We can still use your help! If you have weekend conflicts or your schedule does not allow for a 4-week rotation, we can work with you to make a plan so that you can serve in KidZone. We can always use subsittues for teachers that may be absent, and we have other options that could work as well.

Do I have to be a parent/guardian of a child to serve in KidZone?

The short answer is no. We welcome anyone who loves kids. Our current staff is made up of both men and women. We have parents, prospective parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends of our little ones. If you have a passion to see our children grow in their relationship with Jesus, then you would be a great person to help in KidZone. If you are a college student looking for some extra volunteer hours, this could be a great place to serve.

I have no experience working with kids, what do I need to know?

No experience necessary! We will train you. We have several formal training sessions each year provided by the KidZone staff. These training sessions cover topics such as classroom management, teaching the curriculum, praying for the kids, and leading a child to Christ. Once trained, be prepared and yet be flexible. Come into your classroom having looked at your online teaching resources. The activities we supply are easy to understand and prepared for you by the KidZone staff. Pray for your time in the classroom. Smile and be friendly when interacting with the children. If you need assistance, simply ask for help from the Service Leader or KidZone staff, who will be in the hallway monitoring classrooms. We will be there to assist you as you provide great care for the kids and teach them more about Jesus.

I do not know a lot about the Bible, how can I help?

You do not need to know a lot about the Bible. You simply need to love Jesus and love the kids! You will grow in knowing the Bible as you help in our children's ministry. One of the best ways to learn about the Bible is to teach it to someone. Simply read the curriculum and resource materials which are prepared and provided for you and then pray. God will build a desire in you to read the Bible more and to spend more time with Him. If you are asked a question to which you do not know the answer, you may simply let the children know that. Kids do not expect you to know everything, and it is okay to tell them you are not sure. You do not have to be a Bible scholar to teach our children.
